Head Coach Mike Maynard and Bulldog Athletics welcomed Pete Smolin to the University of Redlands as an assistant football coach earlier this week. Smolin will work primarily with the running backs alongside Maynard and Offensive Coordinator Jim Good.
"I am extremely excited to be a part of this tremendous staff, especially Coach Maynard, who is a legend in the college football coaching community," Smolin commented. "The University of Redlands is a very special place and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to continue my coaching career here in such an outstanding community."
A familiar name to the local community, Smolin previously built the Citrus Valley High School football team from the ground up and elevated the Blackhawks through nine divisions of CIF Southern Section competition over his eight-year tenure. Most recently, his team was honored with the CIF Southern Section Champion for Character Award. He also guided CVHS to the CIF playoffs in five of his seasons, including in 2011 when the Blackhawks won the Mountain Valley League championship.
"I have admired Coach Smolin throughout his coaching career at Citrus Valley. He is a tremendous leader, teacher, coach, and man of character," Maynard stated. "We are fortunate to add his positive energy, great experience, and football knowledge to our staff."
Prior to working at Citrus Valley, Smolin also gained coaching experience at various other high schools and junior colleges in Southern California, adding more than 20 years of on-field involvement to his résumé. Overall, he has led 13 of 16 teams to the CIF playoffs as a head football coach. Furthermore, he brings administrative knowledge as a former athletic director, physical education teacher, and dean of students.
Beyond football, Smolin offers coaching experience in rugby and track & field.
A graduate of West Chester University in Pennsylvania, Smolin holds a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, and later earned his teaching credential from Point Loma Nazarene University. Finally, Smolin currently is pursuing his Master of Arts in Education from Concordia University – Irvine.
Maynard and company are in the midst of recruiting, with their sights on the 2018 season, which includes a 10-game schedule for the first time.
