UR Men's Golf Advances to Third Round of NCAA Championships with Wednesday's Fifth-Place Effort

With a second-round showing of 301, the fifth-ranked University of Redlands men's golf team maintained its fifth-place position at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships to earn one of 15 spots in the final two rounds at the Mission Hills Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.

With a two-day total of 596, the Bulldogs are joined by four other teams in fifth place, including Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  The University of La Verne also made the second-round cut after finishing 13th at 601.

After 36 stellar holes, Oglethorpe University (GA) leads the field with a score of 577, resulting in an impressive 14-stroke lead over second-place Methodist University (NC).

Showing off their consistency in back-to-back rounds, sophomore veterans Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, CA) and Nick Johnson (La Jolla, CA) provided the Bulldogs with their same results from Tuesday.   While continuing to shine on the par-threes, Sanders recorded five birdies on the day en route to his round of 72.  Johnson repeated his first-round effort with a score of 74, which included 12 pars and two birdies on Wednesday.

After two rounds, Sanders is tied for 14th among the top golfers in the country.

Freshman Perry Johnson (Lake Forest, IL) signed his scorecard with a 75, which was just one stroke higher than his opening round.   For the tournament thus far, he has shot par on 24 holes, including 11 of them during today's round.

Freshman Bobby Holden (Simi Valley, CA) and sophomore Jeremy Gomberg (Los Altos, CA) both came off the course with scores of 80.

Redlands returns to the challenging El Campeon course on Thursday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with Gomberg in the second group of the morning.  The Bulldogs join Guilford College (NC), which is tied for third at 595, and Transylvania University (KY), another tied-for-fifth team, on the tees for the third round of the NCAA Championships.
