Senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Division III Individual Doubles Championships on Thursday in Cary, NC, with an exciting three-set victory over Sam King and Oscar Peña of Bowdoin College (ME).
The top duo from the 16th-ranked University of Redlands captured a hard-fought win in the opening set by prevailing in a lengthy tiebreaker, 7-6 (8).
Peña, who is the 2011 NCAA Doubles Champion, joined forces with his current partner to even the tally with a 6-3 showing in the second set.
However, Bloom and Lipscomb answered with a 6-4 effort in the deciding set to punch their tickets to the quarterfinals. The Bulldog pair rallied back from an early break to overcome the All-NESCAC tandem from Bowdoin.
By becoming one of the final eight teams at the national tournament, this doubles team gains All-America status, earning the honor for the first time in these players' respective careers.
The Redlands team faces Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo from the University of Mary Washington (VA), who escaped in three sets earlier today, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(1). The quarterfinal match is slated for Friday at approximately 11 a.m. Pacific time. Fans may follow live scoring at http://livestats.prestosports.com/meredith/tennis/livemd.html.
Earlier in the day, Lipscomb took the court in singles but missed out on a spot in the next round with a tough three-set loss to Eric Shulman of Christopher Newport University, 7-6(4), 0-6, 6-3.
