Redlands Men's Tennis Tandem Finishes Season with Three-Set Loss in NCAA Quarterfinals
The 2012 season came to a close for Bulldog men's tennis All-Americans, senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA), as the duo fell to Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo of the University of Mary Washington (VA) during Friday's quarterfinal match of the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championships by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Redlands' No. 1 doubles team came out firing in the opening set, taking a 3-0 lead before winning by a 6-3 decision.
However, Mary Washington's tandem responded with a hard-fought and perhaps momentum-changing second set, 7-5. Charles and Rizzolo jumped out to an early three-game lead but the Bulldogs fought to get back on serve. Leading 6-5, UMW found a way to break serve for set point, evening the match at one all.
In the third and deciding set, the Eagles secured their spot in the semifinals by building off an early 3-0 lead en route to the final 6-2 tally.
Bloom and Lipscomb put together an overall record of 18-14 on the season, competing at the top spot of the 16th-ranked Bulldog lineup.
