Patrick Lipscomb's Semifinal Showings Highlight Men's Tennis Outing at Ojai

Patrick Lipscomb advanced to the semifinals of singles and doubles during the Ojai Tournament.

Members of the 12th-ranked University of Redlands men's tennis team competed at the 113th Ojai Tournament over the weekend, with two semifinal showings highlighting the Bulldogs' efforts.

Following a first-round bye, sophomore Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) advanced all the way to the semifinals of the singles bracket.  He captured a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Troy Akin from Chapman University and then took down Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' Chris Weichert by scores of 6-2, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinal round.  Lipscomb punched his ticket to the semifinal by defeating Skyler Butts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 6-2, 6-4.  He battled through a long three-setter against CMS' Alex Lane but came up short against the eventual runner-up, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Lipscomb and sophomore Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) also shined in the doubles competition, gaining a spot in the semifinals.  Their first-round bye set up an 8-5 showing against a George Fox University (OR) duo, which inspired an 8-2 triumph against a tandem from Whittier College.  The Bulldogs fell to the eventual champions from Cal Lutheran University, 8-2.

Sophomore Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) also posted a pair of wins in singles for a spot in the Round of 16.  He came up with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 showing against Thomas Low of Pomona-Pitzer and then recorded a 6-4, 6-1 performance over Whittier's Andy Hansen.

Senior John Brewer (Portland, OR) provided solid results in his final Ojai Tournament of his career, winning his opening match against Frankie Allinson of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-4, 6-2.  He also teamed up with senior Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) in doubles for a first-round victory over opponents from Chapman University, 8-2, before falling to the top-seeded duo from CLU.

Now the Bulldog men's tennis team (13-8, 5-2 SCIAC) heads to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Friday-Saturday, May 3-4.  Seeded third, Redlands faces sixth-seeded Occidental College in the 9:30 a.m. match on Friday at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center.
