It was announced on Monday that two University of Redlands men's tennis players landed on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams for their contributions to the 13th-ranked Bulldogs' third-place finish. Sophomore Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) landed on the First Team for the second time in his career, while sophomore Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) earned Second-Team honors in back-to-back years.
While competing at the top spots in doubles and singles, Lipscomb put together an impressive season that has propelled him to the NCAA Division III Individual Championships for singles, which begin May 23 in Kalamazoo, MI.
During conference competition, Lipscomb earned a 6-3 mark, which included wins over the No. 1 players from 19th-ranked Whittier College and 20th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
In addition, Lipscomb joined forces with sophomore Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) as the Maroon and Gray's top doubles duo. They went 5-5 against SCIAC foes this season.
Cummins split time between No. 2 and 3 in singles while recording an 8-2 performance for the Bulldogs. One significant victory came against the No. 3 player from fifth-ranked Cal Lutheran University during the 2013 SCIAC Championship Tournament. He prevailed by scores of 6-2, 6-4 on May 3.
He also contributed to the doubles line-up by teaming up with senior Connor Hyde (Peterborough, NH) to post a 7-3 mark in conference competition. Three of those wins came against No. 2 counterparts from ranked teams, including a 9-7 triumph against a tandem from No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on April 6.
