It was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) that sophomore Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) of the 13th-ranked University of Redlands men's tennis team was named the 2013 ITA Player to Watch for the West Region. This honor follows his recent selection to the NCAA Division III Individual Championships for Singles, which begin on May 23 in Kalamazoo, MI.
In addition, Lipscomb recently landed on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) First Team after garnering an overall record of 19-6 with all but one of his triumphs coming in straight sets. While playing No. 1 for the Bulldogs, he knocked off counterparts from 11 ranked teams, highlighted by a 6-2, 7-6(6) performance over No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' Chris Weichert, who boasts an individual national ranking of No. 11.
He also teamed up with sophomore Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) to compete at the top doubles slot, registering an 18-6 performance on the season. The duo began the campaign on a seven-match win streak before eventually defeating the 11th- and 12th-ranked tandems from No. 18 Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) and No. 19 Whittier College, respectively.
Lipscomb played an integral role in the Maroon and Gray's 12th trip to the NCAA Championships under Head Coach Geoff Roche. The Bulldogs advanced to the second round before falling to top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, which heads to the quarterfinals next week.
Lipscomb joins fellow Bulldog, junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) of the women's team, as the West Region's recipients of the 2013 ITA Player to Watch. They are both now eligible for the ITA's national award, which will be announced at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships.
