The 2013 season came to an end for sophomore All-American Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) of the University of Redlands men's tennis team with today's three-set loss to second-seeded Adam Putterman of Washington University of St. Louis. With the defeat, Lipscomb finishes the spring with an impressive 21-7 singles record while advancing farther than any other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) male competitor at this year's NCAA Division III Singles Championships.
Earlier today, Lipscomb battled through a tight opening set that resulted in a tiebreak that easily could have gone either way. Putterman prevailed but Lipscomb quickly rebounded to go up 5-0 in the second. He eventually evened the match-score with his 6-2 performance.
However, Putterman came rallying back to earn the early break and go up 4-2 in the third before closing out the deciding set at 6-3.
With the quarterfinal appearance, Lipscomb matches the Bulldog men's tennis program's best individual singles finish under Head Coach Geoff Roche since 2005. The squad produced quarterfinalists in back-to-back years with Brian Murphy '04 advancing in 2004 before Michael Thoeresz '05 represented the Maroon and Gray in 2005.
