Redlands Womens Track & Field Ends up Tied for 41st at NCAA Championships
Sophomore Mackenzie Smith’s (Hoquiam, WA) third-place
finish in the Javelin Throw allowed the University of Redlands
women’s track & field team to occupy a share of 41st
place at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field
Championships, which completed on Saturday.
Smith tossed a personal-best mark of 140’ 7” in both
the trial and final flights of the women’s Javelin Throw on
Thursday, earning All-America status.
Third-place finishes are awarded six points, and the team completed
the weekend with that six-point total.
Notably, Smith outscored all of the Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's teams that had
athletes competing at the meet (Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges,
Cal Lutheran University, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Occidental College
and Whittier College).
Junior Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) competed in the 800m Run at the
meet on Friday, but his 1:51.38 fell just short of qualifying for
the final heat.
While just two Redlands athletes qualified for and competed at the
2009 NCAA Championships, five others produced provisional
qualifying standards. The men’s team wound up in second in
the SCIAC while the women finished the conference season ranked
sixth.
Hosted by Marietta College (OH), the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor
Track & Field Championships occurred from May 21-23 at Don
Drumm Stadium in Marietta, OH.
