The University of Redlands women’s lacrosse team competed
in its first road game of the season on Wednesday, earning an
impressive 15-4 victory over the Poets of Whittier College. With
five different goal-scorers, the Bulldogs looked to a well-rounded
effort to capture the solid win.
After scoring the first goal of the game in the ninth minute, the
Bulldogs stormed out to a 6-3 lead at the half. The second period
resulted in a one-sided showing for Redlands, which scored nine
goals to the Poets’ one. Overall, the Bulldogs out-shot
Whittier, 41-31, while gaining 13 more ground balls.
Junior midfielder Lauren Matta (Holyoke, MA) led the team with five
goals while freshman attack player Christy Smith (St. Louis Park,
MN) added four. Junior midfielder Liza Gray (Centennial, CO)
supplied three goals as sophomore attack player Mary Shepherd
(Dallas, TX) scored twice. Sophomore midfielder Haley Kern
(Portland, OR) rounded out the Bulldogs’ offense with her
third goal of the season. Sophomore attack player Diana Frey
(Silver Spring, MD) and sophomore attack player Anna Moriarty (Oak
Park, IL) posted one assist each for Redlands. Senior goalkeeper
Lindsay Feig (Hingham, MA) earned 12 saves between the pipes before
freshman goalkeeper Katrina Hostak took over in the final 12
minutes of the game, making four stops.
The Bulldogs (3-4) head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wed.,
April 2, for a 7 p.m. against the Athenas.
