U of R Women’s Lacrosse Stumbles to Occidental in SCIAC Bout
The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team traveled to Occidental College on Wednesday evening and suffered its first loss of the 2013 campaign. After successfully defeating the Tigers four times last year to capture the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship and advance past the First Round of the NCAA Championships, the Bulldogs fell victim to a strong, second-half performance by Occidental in the 9-12 loss.
Redlands faced an early two-goal deficit, but when junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) and senior attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) scored back-to-back unassisted goals, the Bulldogs tied the game with 20:06 left to play in the first stanza. Craycraft then added another netter five minutes later, giving Redlands its first lead of the night.
Occidental responded quickly to even the score at three apiece, but just over a minute later, Bulldog junior attack player Allie Hoffler (Draper, UT) tallied her lone score of the night to help the Maroon and Gray to regain the one-goal advantage.
The teams traded scores during the final 10 minutes of the first half, and with 1:45 left, junior midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR) notched an unassisted goal, tying the game at 6-6.
The U of R took the lead early in the second half when Craycraft found the back of the net for a fourth time.
However, over the course of the next six minutes, the Tigers scored five unanswered goals to take an 11-7 advantage.
Still with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Bulldogs had enough time to mount a comeback. Unfortunately, solid defense by Occidental foiled Redlands's efforts, as the Bulldogs did not tally another score until the 2:33-mark. Craycraft scored again via a free-position shot, cutting the deficit to just three.
The Tigers pushed the advantage back to a comfortable four scores when they recorded an insurance goal with just over one minute to go.
Craycraft registered her sixth score of the evening with 57 seconds left in regulation, but that was the Bulldogs' last appearance on the scoreboard, resulting in the three-goal defeat.
In addition to her team-leading six scores, Craycraft also nabbed two ground balls and one draw-control. Moreover, senior midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) provided a solid all-around effort while grabbing four ground balls and tallying six draw-controls, both team-best marks.
The Maroon and Gray outshot the Tigers in the first Stanza, 11-8, but Occidental held the shot advantage during the second frame, 8-2.
Graduate student goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) recorded five saves in her first loss of the season.
Redlands (3-1, 3-1 SCIAC) returns to action on Thursday, February 21, when it hosts Augustana College (IL) at Farquhar Field at 7 p.m.
