Redlands' Singles Shine in Tough 4-5 Loss to Washington (MO)
The No. 29 University of Redlands women's tennis team battled it out with the 14th-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis during Wednesday's non-conference bout on Verdieck Courts. After being swept in the doubles, the Bulldogs stepped up by winning four of the six singles matches en route to the tight 4-5 defeat.
Washington proved to be too tough in doubles as the Bears nabbed all three matches.
Although Washington won the first singles match at the top slot, Redlands gained a spark of energy from junior Shannon Cassidy's (Yuba City, CA) solid victory at No. 4, which came by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs ran out of time as the Bears won at No. 6 to secure the overall match triumph.
Despite the decided outcome, the Maroon and Gray impressed in the remaining singles matches, cruising to straight-set wins at all four spots.
Freshman Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) recorded another 6-4, 6-3 showing en route to her defeat of the No. 2 opponent from Washington, giving her squad its fourth point.
Redlands (3-3) takes on the University of Rochester (NY) in Friday's 2 p.m. tilt at Verdieck Courts.
