Members of the University of Redlands women's tennis team competed in the 112th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament, gaining varying results against NAIA, NCAA Division II and III opponents. Highlighting the Bulldogs' success, sophomore Paige Press advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw and the duo of junior Shannon Cassidy and sophomore Jessica Ly made it to the Round of 16 in doubles.
After earning two victories by default, Press prevailed in a tight 7-6(6), 6-3 performance over Cathleen Goya from Pacific University (OR). She suffered a tough two-set loss to the No. 4 seed from Cal State Stanislaus, Verena Preikschas, in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Cassidy and Ly put together an exciting 7-6(5), 6-3 triumph over Goya and her partner, Megan Yoshimito, to advance to the Round of 16. The squad had to default in the next round, ending their competition for the weekend.
Redlands (12-6, 5-2 SCIAC) competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs, seeded third, face off against the sixth-seeded Whittier College Poets at 10 a.m. The match will be played at Cal State Northridge, with Cal Lutheran University serving as the host of the tournament.
