No. 23 UR Women's Tennis Levels Cal Lutheran in Third-Place Match of SCIAC Tournament
The No. 23 University of Redlands women's tennis team captured an impressive 9-0 win over Cal Lutheran University in the third-place match of the 2012 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday in Thousand Oaks. The Bulldogs swept the doubles with solid performances at every slot and then continued to cruise in singles while recording five two-set victories.
During the doubles competition, the No. 2 duo of freshmen Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) made quick work of their opponents en route to an 8-0 decision. Sophomore Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and freshman Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) kept the ball rolling with an 8-3 showing at the No. 3 slot, before the top duo of sophomore Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Shannon Cassidy (Yuba City, CA) wrapped up Redlands' doubles domination with an 8-4 victory.
In singles, the Bulldogs remained in control by winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Pollak dropped just one game in her victory at No. 5 and Press notched the team's deciding point with her 6-1, 6-2 showing at No. 3.
In addition, Morton, Cassidy, Ly and Sumida all came out on top for the Maroon and Gray's shut-out victory.
After shoring up its third-place finish in the overall SCIAC standings, Redlands (14-7, 7-3 SCIAC) now awaits Monday's announcement for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championships in Cary, NC. With a regional ranking of No. 5, the Bulldogs remain hopeful for an opportunity to continue their season.
