Redlands Women's Tennis Garners Solid Experience at ITA West-Regional Tournament

The University of Redlands women's tennis team embarked upon the 2012-13 season with its sole fall competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall West-Regional Tournament, which took place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.  The Bulldogs saw strong results in both singles and doubles, with individuals advancing as far as the finals.

In the main singles draw, sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI), junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) each made it the Round of 16.  Sumida notched a straight-set victory over Genna Ford from Chapman University and then downed Marissa Cohen from Pomona-Pitzer by scores of 7-5, 6-1.  She lost to the top seed and eventual champion, 6-1, 6-3.

Press posted solid wins in her opening two rounds, defeating Erin Coughlan from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-3, 6-0) before topping fourth-seeded Sophia Duong from Chapman, 6-1, 6-1.

Etchegaray made the most of her rookie debut by rattling off a pair of opening wins to advance to the Round of 16. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 showing over Catherine Anderson of Occidental College and then pulled out an exciting 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 performance against seeded opponent, Jessie Huang of CMS.

Redlands was well represented in the main doubles draw as well.  The newly created duo of Etchegaray and sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) earned a spot in the semifinal round with solid wins.  They took down CMS' Sarah Kukino and Jazmin Ortiz, 8-5, and then dismissed Marissa Cohen and Claire Willey from Pomona-Pitzer by a score of 8-3.   The tandem also registered a thrilling 9-8(8) victory over Huang and Crystal Lim from CMS for a spot in the semifinals.

Junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and Sumida joined forces to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw, taking down Amy Logan and Madison Mathis from Chapman, 8-1, before knocking off Cal Lutheran University's Sarah Baker and Emily Werman by a score of 8-2.

During the first-round singles consolation bracket, senior Julia Galbraith (Tacoma, WA) shined by earning a spot in the final.  She defeated Victoria Santoro of CMS (6-3, 6-2) before prevailing over Priya Amritraj of Pomona-Pitzer (7-6(5), 6-3).  She recorded a solid 6-1, 6-1 triumph against the University of La Verne's Brooke Hines and then posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Willey to make it to the final.

Sophomore Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) shut out her first-round opponent in singles, La Verne's Megan Soucy, before dropping a match to third-seeded Samantha Chao of Pomona-Pitzer.  This placed her in the second-round singles consolation bracket, where she notched back-to-back wins for a spot in the semifinal.  She defeated Duong (6-4, 6-2), before fighting back for a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 effort against Caitlin Mannix of UC Santa Cruz.

In the first-round doubles consolation, Press and freshman Gabriela Vasquez (El Segundo, CA) defeated CLU's Becky Drake and Amber Rexford, 8-1, before taking down Kukino and Ortiz by a score of 8-5.

Finally, Galbraith and Morton advanced to the semifinal of the second-round consolation draw for doubles, after earning an 8-2 win against Anderson and Chanelle Gadsden of Occidental and then losing to the No. 4 seed. They rebounded with an 8-4 victory over CMS' Yvonne Likomanova and Victoria Santoro.

Redlands looks forward to the spring season, when it jumps right into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule with an 11 a.m. match at Cal Lutheran on Feb. 2, 2013.
