The 24th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis blanked the Regals of Cal Lutheran University to open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Saturday in Thousand Oaks. With solid performances at every position, the Bulldogs made quick work of their familiar foes en route to the team's second shutout decision in as many matches.
In doubles, the consistent duo of sophomore Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) and junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) initiated the scoring with an 8-2 effort at the No. 3 spot. Momentum remained with the Maroon and Gray as the top tandem of junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) recorded an 8-4 victory, before freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
Up by a score of 3-0, the Bulldogs gained two-set triumphs at every singles position. Pollak and Press came off the court first, earning 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 5 and 4, respectively.
Ly, Sumida, Morton and Etchegaray also registered solid showings in their various singles matches.
Redlands (2-0) takes a break from conference action with a showdown against NAIA competitor, Point Loma Nazarene University, on Sat., Feb. 16. The Bulldogs host the Sea Lions in an 11 a.m. tilt on Verdieck Courts.
