No. 24 Bulldog Women's Tennis Punishes Point Loma Nazarene in 7-2 Win
The 24th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2013 season with a solid 7-2 victory over the visiting Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene University. The Bulldogs swept the doubles against the NAIA's ninth-ranked team, before winning four out of the six singles matches.
Teaming up for the first time this season, junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and freshman Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA)) made quick work of their No. 3 opponents with an 8-3 performance. In addition, the top tandem of junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) cruised to an 8-4 win before sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) secured the Bulldog sweep with an exciting 9-7 triumph at No. 2.
The Maroon and Gray captured the first two singles wins to secure the overall match when Etchegaray and Pollak continued with their winning ways at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively. Etchegaray got on the board first by defeating her opponent, 6-3, 6-2, while Pollak came away with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
With the win in hand, Redlands gained additional singles victories from Sumida at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3) and sophomore Maddie Morton at No. 6 (0-6, 6-3, 12-10).
Redlands (3-0) welcomes Brandeis University (MA) to Verdieck Courts on Sat., Feb. 23, for an 11 a.m. non-conference bout.
