While earning its second upset-win in as many matches, the No. 22 University of Redlands women's tennis team stunned 18th-ranked Sewanee, University of the South (TN), by a score of 6-3 in Tuesday's non-conference bout on Verdieck Courts. After leading 2-1 through the doubles, the Maroon and Gray gained solid two-set triumphs at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles to secure the overall triumph.
In doubles, the top tandem of junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) posted the first win for Redlands with an 8-4 showing. The momentum stayed with the Bulldogs as the No. 2 duo of sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) held on for the 9-7 decision.
Although the Tigers nabbed an 8-6 win at No. 3, Redlands never relinquished control of the lead by winning four of the six singles matches.
Junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) initiated a trio of victories for the Maroon and Gray, as she took down her No. 4 opponent by scores of 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) continued the trend with her 7-6(4), 6-1 performance at No. 6, before Pollak sealed the team's fifth point by prevailing over her No. 5 counterpart, 6-2, 7-5.
Sumida also notched a singles victory on the day with her come-from-behind effort at No. 3, winning 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.
