Competing in its final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual-match of the season, the No. 9 University of Redlands women's tennis team suffered a tough 3-6 loss to No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday in Claremont. The Bulldogs faced an early deficit in the doubles matches before struggling to recover in the singles competitions, leading to only their second defeat of the 2013 campaign.
After the Sagehens captured a win at the No. 1 doubles position, the Maroon and Gray evened the count with an impressive 8-1 trouncing by sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) at No. 2.
But Pomona-Pitzer garnered another point with an 8-5 triumph at the No.3 doubles slot.
Down by a score of 1-2, Redlands faced a must-win scenario in at least four of the six singles matches.
However, the Sagehens collected straight-set showings at Nos. 1, 5, and 6 to seal the overall victory.
Nonetheless, the Bulldogs continued to battle at the remaining positions, with Etchegaray and Pollak prevailing in three sets. Etchegaray came back to win at No. 2 by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Pollak recorded a 6-0,6-7(4), 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position.
Redlands (17-2, 6-2 SCIAC) heads to the 113th Ojai Valley Tournament on April 25-28. For more information, please visit www.ojaitourney.org.
