The 11th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team registered a 6-3 victory over the No. 23 University of La Verne in Saturday's third-place match of the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament. After sweeping the doubles, the Bulldogs earned wins in the first two singles matches off the court to secure the overall triumph.
The Maroon and Gray came out firing and quickly recorded an 8-3 showing at the No. 2 doubles slot, with sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) joining forces for the positive outcome.
The momentum stayed with Redlands, as the top tandem of sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) and junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) put together an 8-6 effort. Finally, freshmen Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) preserved the sweep with a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 3.
The Bulldogs needed just two of the six singles matches to capture a strong third-place finish at the tournament. Junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and Pollak both rolled to victories for Redlands, with Press impressing at No. 5 by scores of 6-2, 6-0, before Pollak unleashed a 6-0, 6-0 showing at No. 4.
Although La Verne mustered a trio of wins, the Maroon and Gray gained a bonus victory for its sixth point at No. 2, where Etchegaray prevailed over her opponent by scores of 6-2, 7-5.
Redlands (19-3, 8-3 SCIAC) finishes third in the final standings by combining tournament and dual-match results during the SCIAC season. The Bulldogs now wait for the NCAA's announcement on Monday for possible an at-large team and/or individual berths to the NCAA Division III Championships.
