The 11th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team kicked off the 2014 season with a 6-3 victory over Chapman University on Saturday. After earning a 2-1 lead in the doubles matches, the Bulldogs won four of the six singles matches to record their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the year.
In doubles, sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and junior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) blanked their opponents at the No. 2 slot, before sophomores Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) joined forces for an 8-4 showing at No. 3.
Although Chapman cut the deficit in half with an 8-5 effort at the top spot, the Bulldogs quickly responded in singles when senior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win against her No. 6 counterpart.
And once again, the Panthers pulled one back with a victory by retirement at No. 1.
Leading 3-2, Redlands only needed two of the remaining four matches to secure the overall win. Pollak closed out her three-setter by scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, before Vasquez clinched the Bulldog triumph with her 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 performance at No. 5.
Etchegaray also posted a positive result for the Maroon and Gray, recording a 7-6(4), 7-6(4) at the No. 2 slot.
Redlands (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) looks forward to hosting 24th-ranked Brandeis University (MA) on Sat., Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. on Verdieck Courts.
