The 11th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team makes the trek to Greencastle, Indiana, for the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Women's Indoor Championship this weekend, facing No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Friday's opening round. While making the program's first-ever appearance, the Bulldogs join seven other nationally-ranked teams, all of which are among the top 15 in the country.
"We are excited to have both teams compete in the ITA Indoors this year, following the men's trip last week. Plus, this is a great, early-season test to see where we are compared to some of the best teams in the country," stated Head Coach Geoff Roche.
Seeded fifth in the tournament, Redlands (2-0) takes on fourth-seeded and fellow Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competitor, Pomona-Pitzer, on Friday at 11 a.m. ET at the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center. The winner faces the victor of Friday's match between the top seed and defending champion Johns Hopkins University (MD) and eighth-seeded UC Santa Cruz in Saturday's 2 p.m. ET match.
Finally, the eight teams play out the draw to its completion, with the consolation final taking place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET and the tournament championship occurring on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
The ITA Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championship is held annually each February. The women's event began in 2009 and will be held for the sixth time in 2014. Only two schools have hosted the event, while Emory University (GA) boasts two titles in the short history of the elite competition. In addition, Carnegie Mellon University (PA), Washington and Lee University (VA), and most recently Johns Hopkins are past champions.
