The No. 17 University of Redlands women's tennis team rolled past the Poets of Whittier College in a 9-0 rout on Friday at Verdieck Courts. With impressive results through much of the lineup, the Bulldogs swept the doubles before winning five straight-setters in singles.
Senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) got things started at the No. 1 slot, dismissing their foes by a score of 8-3. Sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and junior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) followed suit with their 8-5 decision at the No. 2 slot, while the sophomore tandem of Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) also put together an 8-5 performance to complete the sweep.
In singles, senior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and Etchegaray fired off strong performances to capture the fourth and fifth points, respectively. Press prevailed by scores of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, before Etchegaray closed out the match with her 6-0, 6-2 showing at No. 2.
Ly, Sumida, Villanueva, and freshman Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, UT) also posted positive results for the Bulldogs.
On Saturday, Redlands (9-9, 4-3 SCIAC) heads to Caltech for a 10 a.m. match and then returns home for Senior Day at Verdieck Courts in a 3 p.m. tilt against UC Santa Cruz.
