Senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) represented the University of Redlands women's tennis team at the 2014 NCAA Division III Individual Championships on Thursday but came home after a pair of first-round losses.
While competing in her first NCAA individual tournament, Ly faced off against a talented foe from Williams College (MA). Kathleen Elkins handed Ly a career-ending 6-1, 6-0 loss.
Ly earned a singles mark of 11-11 while serving as the Bulldogs No. 1 competitor this year. She also was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) West Region Senior of the Year for her strong contributions to the Redlands program.
In doubles, Ly and Sumida made their inaugural appearance at the postseason event with a three-set battle against Gabrielle Clark and Michelle Satterfield of Emory University (GA) late Thursday afternoon. After dropping the first set, the Bulldog duo rallied back to take the second but lost momentum in the third, resulting in the 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 defeat.
This stellar tandem completed the campaign with a 13-10 record.
