Senior Distance Runner Emily Canales Collects SCIAC All-Academic Team Plaudits

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) recently announced that senior Emily Canales (Redlands, CA) represents the University of Redlands on the 2011-12 SCIAC Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team, which includes 35 honorees from the eight member schools.

To be eligible for recognition on the SCIAC All-Academic team, a cross country runner must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 after completing at least one full academic year at his/her current institution while reaching sophomore athletic eligibility. In addition, this individual must have finished in the top half at either the conference championship meet or the conference multi-dual meet during the current cross country season.

Canales finished third at the 2011 SCIAC Championship meet on October 29 en route to her second All-SCIAC First-Team honor with her time of 23:38.54. Two weeks earlier, she took ninth at the multi-dual meet with her team-leading time of 22:52.52.

She boasts a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA as a Communicative Disorders major.

During the spring, Canales competes for the Bulldog track &field team, excelling in the 3000m Steeplechase as well other long-distance events. Her season-best Steeplechase time of 11:31.54 currently ranks first among this season's NCAA Division III competitors.
