The University of Redlands men's basketball team closed out the Redlands Tip-Off Classic on a high note with a huge non-conference victory over Linfield College (OR), 94-69, on Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard David Menary (Grass Valley, CA) got off to a hot start, registering a block and a steal in the first 40-seconds of action.
Although Redlands always held a slight lead over Linfield, a three-pointer from junior guard Jack Roggin (Toluca Lake, CA) lit a spark in the offense to go on a 5-0 run. Junior guard Vincenzo Ferrari (Burlingame, CA) contributed by swiping a steal that led to a junior wing Gary Menary (Grass Valley, CA) layup in the scoring spurt. The Bulldogs now held a 17-8 lead with 15:21 left to go in the half.
Three minutes later, senior guard Brittian Foster (Long Beach, CA) put up a layup that was followed by a Linfield three-pointer. However, on the Bulldogs subsequent possession, senior guard Thomas Scriven (Anaheim, CA) scored a trey-ball of his own off a quick pass from Foster to go up 22-15 with 12:26 left.
G. Menary made his presence known by knocking down a jumper and a three-pointer within a two-minute span to build a 27-18 lead. D. Menary provided the assists on both buckets.
The trey-ball kept working for the Bulldogs, this time with senior guard Hass Berry (Riverside, CA) and Roggin responsible for Redlands' next nine points.
With 5:08 remaining, Ferrari found G. Menary for a bucket from beyond the arc, to go up by 20 points at 45-25.
The Maroon and Gray continued to cruise with made layups and free throws to build a 57-36 lead by halftime.
Eight minutes into the second half, D. Menary swiped a steal and took it coast to coast, finishing with a high-light reel dunk to maintain the 20-point lead.
With just 36 ticks left on the clock, first-year guard Ivan Barocio (Salinas, CA) knocked down both of his free-throws to give Redlands its biggest lead of the afternoon at 92-64. He hit two more from the charity stripe before the end of the game to solidify the 94-69 win.
Roggin ended the game with a team-leading 19 points, while D. Menary followed with 12 points. D Menary also added seven assists, four steals, and two blocks.
Redlands (1-1) returns to action on Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, for the Lee Fulmer Memorial Classic. The team will be facing Luther College (IA) on Friday and Southwestern (TX) on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
