The University of Redlands men's water polo team traveled
to nearby Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday to face the Sagehens
in an important Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) match. The Bulldogs prevailed in an exciting
10-9 victory and then returned home to the Thompson Aquatic Center
to take on non-conference rival Chapman University. With 16
different players scoring, Redlands gained the easy 18-2 win over
the Panthers.
Saturday's first game pitted the Bulldogs against the
Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer in an exciting dual match between two of
the top conference teams. With strong play and perseverance,
Redlands squeaked out the 10-9 win. The Bulldogs gained three goals
apiece from senior center Ryan Hall (Bellevue, WA) and junior
driver Andrew Becskehazy (Surfside, FL) to lead the charge. Junior
driver Erik Grosshans (Oxnard, CA) added two while sophomore center
Brendan Meaney (Palm Desert, CA) and senior driver Tony Rona
(Mercer Island, WA) rounded out the Bulldog offense. Sophomore
Teddy Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA) patrolled the goal, making
eight stops.
The Bulldogs then returned home to host Chapman in a non-conference
game, earning the solid 18-2 victory. Sophomore driver Ryan
Floersch (San Jose, CA) and freshman driver Tim Hendrickson (Los
Altos, CA) supplied two goals each while 14 other players scored
for the Bulldogs. Trowbridge earned six saves before sophomore Matt
Adams (Vista, CA) took over as goalkeeper, tallying two saves.
Finally, sophomore goalkeeper Jack Amaral (Porterville, CA) added
to Redlands' last line of defense by making one stop.
Redlands (15-10, 3-0 SCIAC) hosts Cal Lutheran University on
Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then welcomes Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to the
Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. Immediately
following the match against CMS, the annual Alumni Game will take
place at approximately 12:30 p.m.
