With a 4-2 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
Championship Tournament final on Sunday afternoon in Claremont, the
University of Redlands men's water polo team earned the SCIAC
title outright.
Senior center Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) paced the
Bulldogs' scoring with two goals while junior center Miran
Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) and junior center Blake
vanHartesvelt (Mercer Island, WA) each found the back of the cage
once.
Proving resilient once again, senior goalkeeper Teddy Trowbridge
(Mercer Island, WA) stopped a game-high eight shots in between the
pipes for the Maroon and Gray.
Redlands moved through the first two rounds of the tournament with
ease, defeating the University of La Verne, 13-7, on Friday before
handing Pomona-Pitzer Colleges a 13-9 defeat yesterday. The Stags
edged Cal Lutheran University, 10-8, on Friday and upset the
tournament's No. 1 seed, Whittier College, by a 6-5 score
yesterday.
The Bulldogs last won a SCIAC title in 2006 when they posted a
perfect 10-0 record in conference play. This marks the
program's eighth conference championship, all of which have
come under the direction of Head Coach Tom Whittemore.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (13-16, 5-5 SCIAC) awaits the notification
of a possible at-large bid into the Western Water Polo Association
(WWPA) Championships.
Redlands (17-16, 9-1 SCIAC) has earned an automatic berth into the
WWPA Championships, which will be held at Chapman University from
Nov. 20-22. Opponents and game times are to be announced once the
field is set.
