The University of Redlands men's water polo captured the final spot in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships with a 10-7 victory over Chapman University on Thursday night. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs pulled away with a 4-1 performance in the third period, edging the ninth-seeded Panthers in the teams' opening game of the tournament.
The squads traded goals in the first frame, with the Maroon and Gray garnering a slight 3-2 advantage.
Senior driver Shane Anderson (Riverside, CA) scored the first of his four goals early in the second stanza to extend the Bulldogs' lead to two.
However, the Panthers refused to go away, keeping the score close through the end of the first half.
After switching sides, Redlands uncorked a 4-1 run in the third period, providing the difference in the victory. Anderson accounted for three of the Maroon and Gray's goals during this spurt.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Abbott (Alta Loma, CA) racked up 10 saves for the Bulldogs, including four in the influential third quarter.
Aside from Anderson, no other Bulldog scored more than once in the victory as Redlands relied on a diversified attack.
Redlands (17-17) faces top-seeded Loyola Marymount University in Friday's 6 p.m. game at the Canyonview Aquatic Center on the campus of UC San Diego.
