The University of Redlands men's water polo continued its voyage through Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Wednesday night, when the Bulldogs faced off against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Stags at the Thompson Aquatic Center. Despite outscoring the opponents in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs' slow start handed them a 6-8 defeat to the Stags.
The Bulldogs struggled to fire up any offensive rhythm during the first three periods, resulting in a one-goal showing in each stanza. The Stags put together a four-goal first period, which added to the difficulty of any chance of a comeback victory for the Maroon and Gray.
Redlands stepped up in the final frame, out-scoring the visiting team by a 3-2 margin, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Senior driver Michael Robinson (Corona, CA) and freshman center Matthew Shippen (Santa Maria, CA) served as the top scorers for the Maroon and Gray by netting two goals in the contest. In addition, senior center David Sekula (LaGrange, IL) and junior center driver Nelson Glendinning (Philadelphia, PA) chipped in one goal apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Sekula (LaGrange, IL) strung together a nice showing by tallying eight saves in the contest.
The Bulldogs (5-18, 1-3 SCIAC) continue SCIAC action on Saturday, November 1, when they travel to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (4-15, 1-2 SCIAC) at 11 a.m.
