Bulldog Men's Water Polo Sweeps Toronto and Cuesta to end Lancer Joust Invite

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team ended the Lancer Joust Invitational Saturday with a pair of wins over Toronto University (14-11) and Cuesta College (17-10) improving to 12-5, 3-0 SCIAC.

Game 1 (Toronto University; W, 14-11)

Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA), Spencer Sellwood (Irvine, CA), and Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO) got the Bulldogs started quickly as UR led 3-1 with only 22 seconds remaining in the first.

The Varsity Blues would score before the end of the first, but the Bulldogs would go with four unanswered to take a 7-2 lead. A late Toronto goal made it 7-3 at the half.

Things got a bit dicey in the third as Spencer Clinton opened the scoring with a goal 1:31 into the quarter, but the Varsity Blues scored four-straight to pull within two, 8-6, with 3:18 to play in the third.

The two sides went back-and-forth, trading goals as Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) scored on a five-meter penalty, Sellwood scored for a second time, and Moody made it 11-8 with 5:40 to play in the game.

After Toronto pulled within one, 11-10, with 4:50 on the clock in the fourth, Redlands finished the game off on a 3-1 run, including the final two goals with Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tivon, Israel), Sellwood on a penalty, and Moody for a third time all converting on their attempts for a 14-11 win.

Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) played all 32:00 minutes between the posts and picked up five saves.

Game 2 (Cuesta College; W, 17-10)

The second game on the day proved to be a dominant performance by the Maroon and Grey as they raced out to a 5-2 lead after the opening eight minutes and then 10-4 at the break.  They tacked on a two goal advantage in the third period and then added another three across the final eight minutes to grab the victory.

Redlands outshot Cuesta College 35-23, added 18 points and 11 steals.  11 different players found the back of the net led by Andrew Higginson (San Diego, CA) who posted three to go with three steals.  Curren McCarthy, Alec Abrahamian (Glendale, CA), Sellwood and Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) each provided another two and other support came from Owen DeCourcy (Alameda, CA), Clinton, Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA), Austin Galanski (Bakersfield, CA), Thomas Byrne (Boudler, CO), and Gvishi,

The Bulldogs finished off Cuesta College 17-10 in an exhibition to finish the invite and they will now prepare for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action as they travel to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
