REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (8-3, 2-0 SCIAC) won a non-conference matchup with Ottawa (Ariz.) University 13-12 despite resting seven of their starters Thursday evening at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
Despite the new lineup, the Bulldogs scored first thanks to a
Tanner Whitson assisted,
Andrew Sorensen goal :51 seconds into the first. After the Spirit got the goal back,
Max Wagener made it 2-1 thanks to an
Austin Galanski assist.
With 3:18 left in the first Ottawa took the 3-2 lead, but
Curren McCarthy scored to equalize :12 seconds later as he was found by Galanski. The Spirit, though, would lead 4-3 after the first eight minutes.
The Bulldogs had a strong offensive and defensive second quarter as they scored three times taking a 6-4 lead with :29 seconds until halftime. A late Ottawa goal made it 6-5 after two quarters.
The third quarter was a struggle as Redlands allowed five goals with the exception of a two-goal, :41 second stretch, they were unable to find any consistent offense, however, they were down only one, 9-8.
Despite a slow start in the final quarter for UR allowing a first minute goal and trailing by multiple goals for the first time, Wagener and
Owen Nishimura would spark the surge late each scoring at the 6:35 and 5:33 marks to tie it at 10.
Redlands would find themselves behind again at 11-10 and 12-11, with a
Callum Norman goal sandwiched in between, but the final two scorers of the game came from the Bulldogs as they sealed a 13-12 victory. Galanski tied the game with :47 seconds left, and after getting a defensive stop, Sorensen netted the game-winner with :14 seconds on the clock.
Galanski tied for a game-high with five points as he tallied three goals and two assists. Wagener had a game-high four goals, Sorensen had three points, and Whitson had two assists. In goal
Troy Barker made the start and played all 32 minutes with five saves and a game-high four steals.
Redlands now turns their attention to the Gary Troyer Tournament where they will play twice on Saturday, first at 11:40 a.m. against the University of the Pacific at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then at 3:40 p.m. against Augustana College at Pomona-Pitzer.
