REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (8-10, 4-0 SCIAC) took down Pomona-Pitzer 13-6 in a dominant second half performance where the Bulldogs outscored the Sagehens 9-2.
After falling behind 2-0 the Maroon and Grey bounced back with Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA) and Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tivon, Israel) going back-to-back tying the game up at 2-2 following the opening eight minutes. Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) earned an assist on the first goal and Gvishi's tally came on a powerplay.
Both teams traded two goals each in the second quarter as Nicolas Fedotov (Miami Beach, FL) found Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) on a 6-on-5 powerplay and then returned to find Moody to give Redlands a 4-3 lead before Pomona-Pitzer tied it before half.
Following goals from each team in the first minute and a half of the third quarter, Moody found Wagener at the 5:05 mark of the period leading to the U of R scoring seven unanswered goals, which stretched down to the 4:41 mark of the fourth.
During the run Wagener and Fedotov each scored twice with Moody and Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa) also finding the back of the net. Brody Nielsen (Capitola, CA) also picked up an assist.
Nielsen also scored inside the final minute of the game as Fedotov added another assist to his total as the Bulldogs won another big game within conference play.
The Bulldogs and Sagehens each totaled 27 shots, but Redlands converted at 48.1%, while the Sagehens shot just 22.2%. That low percentage from PP was due to Barrera who totaled 13 saves between the posts.
In the field Wagener had a game-high five goals and added two assists, Fedotov had two goals, four assists, a drawn exclusion, and two steals and Moody had a hat trick with an assist and three drawn exclusions.
Redlands now pivots to the team at the bottom of the standings in Caltech this Saturday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. in Pasadena.
