Redlands Men's Water Polo extends SCIAC winning streak following win at Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In a low-scoring Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game, the University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (10-10, 6-0 SCIAC) put together a consistent performance in their 12-7 win at Occidental College Wednesday night remaining undefeated in conference play at 6-0.

The Tigers held an early 2-1 lead with the lone Bulldog score coming on a powerplay from Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA).

At the end of one it was tied at three as Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) converted a penalty before finding Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa) for the equalizer.

The big run for the Bulldogs came in the first six minutes of the second quarter as they held their largest lead of the game at three, 6-3. Kalani Nelson, Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA), and Norman all scored with Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO), Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA), and Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tivon, Israel) picking up assists.

Occidental responded with two consecutive goals to make it a one-goal game early in the third quarter.

But Redlands would put the game to bed with a 5-1 run that saw them hold the Tigers to one goal across 14 minutes as they were up five, 11-6, with less than four minutes to play.

The icing on the cake for the Bulldogs came from Brody Nielsen (Capitola, CA) in the final four seconds when he made it 12-7, which keeps the winning streak intact.

Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) made nine saves and posted a .563 save percentage as he returned from a game off last Saturday.

The Bulldogs now prepare to travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this Saturday, October 26 at 11:00 a.m. in a key game within the conference standings.
