Men's Water Polo opens Gary Troyer with two losses against Top-10 Division I teams

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team lost 24-12 to No. 10 Long Beach State University (LBSU) Friday morning in game one of the Gary Troyer Tournament, then took on T-No. 6 UC Irvine (UCI) falling 15-5.

Game 1: Long Beach State (L, 24-12)

The Bulldogs trailed 7-0 in the opening six minutes of the first quarter before Nicolas Fedotov (Miami Beach, FL) started a 3-0 run that pulled the U of R within four, 7-3. Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA) and Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA) also scored with Moody adding an assist on the Clinton goal.

At the half Redlands trailed 12-4 after Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO) found Harrison DeCourcy (Alameda, CA) at the 2:51 mark of the second quarter.

Following an 8-0 LBSU run, Moody converted on a penalty with 3:44 to play in the third. He also ended the Bulldog scoring in the quarter as he again converted on a five-meter penalty.

In the fourth Redlands held the 6-5 advantage thanks to goals from Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA), Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA), Kalani Nelson (Torrance, CA), Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA), and Hunter Starkey (San Bernardino, CA).

Game 2: UC Irvine (L, 15-5)

In their final game of day one Redlands flipped the script from the morning as they scored two of the first three goals from Moody and Fedotov and held the Anteaters to just one goal in the first four plus minutes. Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA) and Whitson added the assists.

UCI then came back and scored five unanswered goals before Brody Nielsen (Capitola, CA) scored with 1:26 left in the half to keep Redlands within three, 6-3, at the break.

The game was put away by UCI in the third as they outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 with the lone conversion coming from Wagener on a penalty.

The final goal of the game then came on a powerplay late in the fourth when DeCourcy was able to get on the scoresheet.

Saturday the Bulldogs will wrap up the Gary Troyer taking on Johns Hopkins University at 12:00 (noon) at Axelrood Pool at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then No. 19 California Baptist University at 4:00 p.m. at Haldeman Pool at Pomona-Pitzer.
