REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (13-11, 9-1 SCIAC) pulled away in the fourth quarter to complete the lopsided win, 19-6, over the California Institute of Technology on senior night Wednesday when they honored their 16 seniors: Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico), Aidan Murphy (Placentia, CA), Jack Everett (Westlake Village, CA), Jack Ryan (Ventura, CA), Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA), Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tiv'on, Israel), Callum Norman (Johannesburg, South Africa), Nicolas Fedotov (Miami Beach, FL), Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA), Thomas Byrne (Boulder, CO), Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO), Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA), Hunter Starkey (San Bernardino, CA), Austin Galanski (Bakersfield, CA), Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA), and Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA).
It was a competitive first eight minutes as the Bulldogs only led by one, 2-1, and did not score for the final 6:01 of the quarter as Gvishi and Moody both found the back of the net.
A dominant second quarter put the U of R up four, 6-2, at the half following tallies from Wagener, Fedotov, Sorensen, and Ryan. Byrne, Adam Lambert (St. Louis, CA), and Nishimura picked up the assists.
After a pair of Murphy and Galanski goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter the Maroon and Grey were comfortably in front, 10-3. Caltech, though, made it interesting with three goals over the final 2:16 making it a four-goal game after 24 minutes.
Any doubt, however, was quickly extinguished as Wagener and Gvishi put home goals in the first 1:38 of the fourth as UR went on to outscore the Beavers 9-0 across the final 8:00 minutes.
Gvishi finished with two goals and three steals, Moody had a goal, an assist, two drawn exclusions, and a steal, Wagener had three goals and two assists for a game-high five points, Clinton continued his great defensive work with three more drawn exclusions.
Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) made the start in goal and played the first 24 minutes making nine saves, while Michael Bannister (Bainbridge Island, WA) pitched a shutout with three saves in the fourth.
Redlands travels to Claremont to face off with No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, November 9 with the winner most likely to take home the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular season title, while clinching the top-seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament.
