Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) got off to a great start at the NCAA Division III National Championship for Individuals Saturday earning All-American recognition in singles.
The Redondo Beach native cruised to an opening match win in the Round of 32 beating Cassandra Lee from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-0, 6-1. In the match Deng won 72% of the points (51-of-71), 65% of her first serve points, 80% of her second serve points and did not commit any unforced errors. She was also 6-for-8 on break point opportunities.
Deng then advanced to the Round of 16 where she ran into Babson' Matia Cristiani. Deng fell behind early 6-2 but battled back to take the second set 7-5 forcing a decisive third. The final frame though would go to the Beavers 6-4 forcing Deng out of the draw.
It was a tight battle with Deng winning 48% of the points (84-of-176). She committed three unforced errors, had a first serve percentage of 86%, won 47% of her first serves, 31% of her second serves and was 8-for-16 on break-point opportunities.
