Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Redlands Men's Water Polo falls to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 12-7 on Homecoming

REDLANDS, Calif. – On Homecoming the University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team hosted Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival and No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Saturday morning at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) where the Stags remained undefeated, handing the Bulldogs their first conference loss, 12-7.

The Bulldogs dug themselves a deficit early scoring just once in the first quarter and finding themselves down three, 4-1, early in the second period. The lone score came from Jake Simpson (El Cajon, CA).

Heading into the half, though, Matthew Wheeler (Visalia, CA) and Harrison DeCourcy (Alameda, CA) each scored to make it a 5-3 game at the break.

Following a CMS tally to begin the third quarter, Simpson found Wheeler on a powerplay and Tim Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill.) assisted Ossie Joplin (Kentfield, CA) that cut the deficit back to two, 7-5.

At the 3:33 mark of the fourth quarter the Stags looked like they put the game away with their fourth-straight goal leading by six, 11-5. But the Bulldogs got a powerplay goal just :16 seconds later from Simpson and Lennon Franklin (Redlands, CA) scored to make it a four-possession game.

The late push would not be enough, however, as the Maroon and Grey would drop only their second game against a Division III opponent.

Simpson and Wheeler each had multi-goal games. Simpson also had a pair of assists for four points. In goal Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) played the entire 32 minutes and made seven saves with a steal.

Redlands is back on the road this Wednesday, October 22 as they take on No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
