ORANGE, Calif. – First-Year Ossie Joplin (Kentfield, CA) scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining as the University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (9-16, 7-2 SCIAC) beat Chapman University, 12-11 extending their winning streak to four games. .
Redlands conceded the opening two goals to Chapman before Joplin went back-to-back followed by Lennon Franklin (Redlands, CA) and Oliver Finley (Cape Town, South Africa) finishing to make it 4-2 Bulldogs with 1:13 to play in the opening quarter.
A 3-1 response run by the Panthers tied the game at five before the Bulldogs scored two of the final three to push ahead, 7-6, at the half. Finley and Joplin scored and Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA) had an assist.
In the first five minutes of the third quarter the Bulldogs looked to have taken control of the game with a 3-0 run that put them on top by four, 10-6. Joplin scored two more times before Matthew Wheeler (Visalia, CA) found Harrison DeCourcy (Alameda, CA) for his first.
Like they have in nearly every other match-up between these two teams the last two seasons the Panthers went on a 5-1 run that tied the game at 11-11 with 3:17 on the clock in the fourth quarter.
Redlands had two shots saved and saw Kalani Nelson (Torrance, CA) hit the post. Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) then made two saves, which was then followed by Chapman hitting the post, leading to a 30-second timeout by the Bulldogs with :14 seconds left.
Ten seconds after the break Joplin beat the Panther keeper putting UR on top by one. On the other end Chapman played seven-on-six with the keeper pulled from the net, but they failed to get a shot off and Redlands earned the hard fought road win their eighth-straight victory in the series.
Joplin and Finley combined for 10 goals on the morning. Barker made 15 saves for a .577 save percentage, he added a steal too.
Redlands returns home for a game with Whittier College next Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.
