Bulldog Men's Water Polo ends regular season with 10-9 win over Cal Lutheran on Senior Day

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (10-18, 8-4 SCIAC) ended the regular season with a 10-9 win over California Lutheran University (CLU) Saturday on senior day.

The Bulldogs had already locked in the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament, but the Kingsmen needed the win to make the top five and qualify, which the Bulldogs stopped from happening with the victory.

Redlands started very strong with goals from Oliver Finley (Cape Town, South Africa) and Tim Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill.) off a Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) assist, while their defense held CLU scoreless for more than four minutes.

CLU, however, did respond with four unanswered as the Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second quarter finding themselves down 4-2 at the break.

In the opening minute and a half of the third Lennon Franklin (Redlands, CA) and Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA) each connected to even the game, two of 10 total goals in the quarter.

Later on, Finley scored off a pass from Matthew Wheeler (Visalia, CA) and Jensen found Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO), but UR was still down one, 7-6.

The Kingsmen stretched the lead to two, 9-7, after an Ossie Joplin (Kentfield, CA) goal and a tally by CLU. But the Bulldogs dominated the remainder of the game. They held CLU off the scoreboard for the final 9:33.

The game-tying goal came from Michael Villagran (Glendora, CA) off a Camilo Solis (Camarillo, CA) assist with 4:29 to play. Jake Simpson (El Cajon, CA) then swung a pass from the right side of the pool to the left where Tanner Stagner (Laguna Niguel, CA) had a quick release providing the game winner with 1:33 remaining as CLU never even got a shot off in the final minute and a half.

Redlands travels to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Thursday, November 20 for the SCIAC Tournament Semifinal beginning at 7:00pm.
