THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The University of Redlands Women's Flag Football team had an exciting, action-packed weekend at the California Lutheran University Invitational, where they faced off against a variety of teams in a series of challenging match-ups.
The competition kicked off on Friday with Redlands' first game against Irvine Valley College. In a thrilling battle, the Bulldogs fought hard but fell short, losing 12-6. The team's sole touchdown came courtesy of a standout play by
Averie Stunz (Stanwood, WA), who made an impressive pick-six, running it the entire length of the field to get Redlands on the scoreboard.
Later that day, Redlands bounced back with a strong performance against the host team, Cal Lutheran. The Bulldogs cruised to a 28-14 victory, dominating on both sides of the ball and securing their first win of the tournament. Stunz again made an impact with both a pick-six and a rushing touchdown, showcasing her play-making ability.
However, the third game of the day proved to be a tough one for Redlands, as they faced a high school club team playing under the banner of Mira Costa Junior College. Despite their best efforts, Redlands suffered a 36-0 loss.
On Saturday, Redlands entered the bracketed portion of the tournament as the No. 6 seed. In their first match-up of the day, they faced Arizona State, one of the tournament's top teams. It was another hard-fought contest, but Redlands fell 18-7. Although the Bulldogs were unable to secure the win, they showed resilience, especially in the second half, as Arizona State was held scoreless after halftime.
Several players stood out throughout the weekend. Stunz's dual-threat performance, with both a pick-six and rushing touchdown, was a highlight.
Grace Hove (Seattle, WA) caught a receiving touchdown, while
Vanessa Martinez (Mission Hills, CA) added a rushing touchdown to the mix.
Yvette Alvarado (Los Angeles, CA) also contributed with a receiving touchdown, making key plays to keep the Bulldogs competitive throughout the tournament.
Despite the mixed results, Redlands' performance at the California Lutheran University Invitational showed their potential, grit, and promise for the rest of the season. The team returns to action this Saturday, April 5 when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Gametime yet to be determined.
