LOS ANGELES – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (1-10) dropped two games Saturday during Day 2 action of the Overnght MPSF Invitational falling to No. 12 Pepperdine University 25-11 before getting beat 17-7 by No. 15 Santa Clara University.
Game 1 (Pepperdine University; L, 25-11)
The Bulldogs and Waves were tied at one after Matthew Wheeler (Visalia, CA) found Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA) on a powerplay with 3:25 on the clock in the first.
Following a 6-0 Pepperdine run Oliver Finley (Cape Town, South Africa) found Madigan for his second goal of the game. Redlands pulled two more goals back in the final 3:29 with Jake Simpson (El Cajon, CA) scoring on a powerplay followed by Wheeler feeding Finley to keep the Bulldogs within six, 10-4, at the break.
In the third Madigan and Finley both scored with Lennon Franklin (Redlands, CA) assisting Finley with 1:43 to play in the quarter.
13 total goals were scored in the final eight minutes with the Bulldogs finding the back of the net five times. Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) scored twice with Harrison DeCourcy (Alameda, CA), Brady Bailey (Ramona, CA), and Finley each notching another three.
Camilo Solis (Camarillo, CA) drew three exclusions, Tim Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill.) had two along with an assist, Nielsen added three steals to his assist, and both Madigan and Finley scored hat tricks.
In goal Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) played the full 32 minutes and made nine saves.
Game 2 (Santa Clara University; L, 17-7)
The Bulldogs scored three of the first five goals thanks to Brody Nielsen (Capitola, CA), Simpson, and Oliver Child (Dana Point, CA) off assists from Lambert, Finley, and Stephen Ramirez (Pasadena, CA).
Middle part of the second Redlands found themselves down 7-3 before a powerplay allowed Nielsen to finish. The fifth and final goal of the half came on another powerplay when Wheeler fed Finley.
Finley and Child had the final two goals of the game for the Bulldogs.
Nielsen, Child, and Finley each had two goals. Simpson, Child, and Finley each drew multiple exclusions. In goal Barker made four saves and had three steals, while Nathan Gattorna (Carlsbad, CA) finished with three saves in the final eight minutes.
Sunday morning, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. Redlands will play in the 15th place game against Claremont-M-S who lost to UC Santa Barbara earlier in the day.
