Day 1 Recap: University of Redlands Swim & Dive Open SCIAC Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - The 2026 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off Wednesday with relay events and diving competition, and the University of Redlands sent competitors across all six events as the four-day meet got underway.

Men's 200 Yard Medley Relay
The Bulldogs men opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the A-Final of the 200 Medley Relay. The squad of Flynn Bayne (Seattle, WA), Tim Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill.), Ethan Chir (Henderson, NV), and Kadyn Butcher (Vancouver, WA) touched the wall at 1:33.44, earning 28 points for the team. The B Relay of Sebas Maccalla (Altadena, CA), Noah Tikoo (Oviedo, FL), Landynn Olivas (El Centro, CA), and Finn Mutuc (Boulder, CO) added four more points with a 1:39.35 finish.

Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay
On the women's side, the Redlands' A relay team of Lina Matera (Hingham, MA), Athena Fitzgerald (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA), Clare Carroll (Jamestown, R.I.), and Avery Wells (Seattle, WA) finished eighth in the A-Final with a time of 1:51.97, good for 22 points. The B relay team of Ana-Adela Duran (Albuquerque, N.M.), Camryn Qsar (Bakersfield, CA), Kileigh Ackerman (Evergreen, CO), and Brooklyn Green (Fontana, CA) rounded out the field in 1:53.30, picking up two more points for the Maroon and Grey.

Men's 3-Meter Diving
Redlands did not have a diver compete in the Men's 3-Meter event.

Women's 1-Meter Diving
Freshman Sydney Kerns (West Covina, CA) and junior Ayanna Leal (Las Cruces, N.M.) represented Redlands on the boards in the Women's 1-Meter event. Kerns had the stronger performance of the two, finishing 10th with a score of 318.50 to earn seven points. Leal was not far behind in 14th place with a score of 278.35, adding three more points to the Bulldogs' total.

Men's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay
The men's 800 Free Relay was a highlight of the night for Redlands. The A squad of Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA), Tikoo, David Basa (Hoffman, Ill.), and Olivas finished eighth in the A-Final with a time of 7:10.65, earning 22 points. The B relay of Mutuc, Connor O'Sullivan (West Hollywood, CA), Will Coziahr (Chula Vista, CA), and Cole Robinson (Phoenix, AZ) finished 17th overall at 7:30.08.

Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay
The women's 800 Free Relay squad of Kaile Itow (Morgan Hill, CA), Duran, Ava Marie Vearrier, and Rylie Kohl (Eastvale, CA) posted a time of 8:23.92 for seventh place in the A-Final and an additional 24 points. The B relay team of Mackenzie Neese (Folsom, CA), Aubree Nabors (Conroe, TX), Olivia Meverden (Redmond, WA), and Christina Bennett (Huntington Beach, CA) finished 16th at 8:40.35, earning two points.
 
Team Standings After Day 1
Through six events, Redlands sits seventh in the women's standings with 60 points and eighth in the men's standings with 54 points. The meet continues through Saturday, February 21, with plenty of individual events remaining for Bulldogs swimmers to make their mark.
