REDLANDS, Calif. – Thanks to a five-goal second quarter the University of Redlands women's lacrosse team (1-1) were within three goals at the half in their home opener against Bates College Friday morning, but the Bulldogs managed only two second half goals as they fell 19-8 at Farquhar Field.
The Bulldogs trailed the Bobcats by five, 5-0, with less than four minutes remaining in the opening quarter before Emily Webster scored in what was the first of four unanswered goals. Ruby Czajkowski had the other three as Redlands were within one, 5-4, with 10:31 on the clock in the second.
Bates had a strong response to Redlands' run, scoring four of the next five with Webster's second goal off a Czajkowski assist being the lone tally for the Bulldogs.
Ella Batarse, though, helped take advantage of a player advantage situation as she found Webster with 2:08 left in the half to help them stay within three, 9-6.
In the second half Czajkowski scored for the fourth time inside of five minutes played as the deficit remained at three. From the 6:06 mark to the 13:32 mark of the fourth the Bobcats tacked on five more goals as the lead was eight, 15-7.
April Bryant would find Cailin Walker for a goal just over two minutes into the fourth, but that was the final score of the game as the Bulldogs dropped their first game of the season.
Czajkowski had four goals and an assist while Webster had three. Courtney Myers made eight saves in just under 50 minutes in goal.
The Bulldogs begin a three-game road trip in Oregon on Tuesday at Pacific University at 5:30 p.m.
