REDLANDS, Calif. – Thanks to a five-goal second quarter the University of Redlands women's lacrosse team (1-1, 1-0 SCIAC) found themselves within three goals at the half in their home opener against Bates College Friday morning, but the Bulldogs managed only two second half tallies as they fell 19-8 at Farquhar Field.
The Bulldogs trailed the Bobcats by five, 5-0, with less than four minutes remaining in the opening quarter before Emily Webster (Ladera Ranch, CA) scored in what was the first of four unanswered for the Maroon and Grey. Ruby Czajkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) had the other three as Redlands pulled within one, 5-4, with 10:31 on the clock in the second.
Bates had a strong response to Redlands' run, scoring four of the next five with Webster's second goal off a Czajkowski assist being the lone tally for the Bulldogs.
Ella Batarse (Porter Ranch, CA) then helped take advantage of a player advantage situation finding Webster with 2:08 left in the half to help UR stay within three, 9-6.
In the second half Czajkowski scored for the fourth time inside of five minutes played as the deficit remained at three. From the 6:06 mark to the 13:32 mark of the fourth the Bobcats tacked on five more goals as the lead grew to eight, 15-7.
April Bryant (Danville, CA) would find Cailin Walker (Portland, OR) for a goal just over two minutes into the fourth, but that was the final score of the game as the Bulldogs dropped their first game of the season.
Czajkowski finished with four goals and an assist, while Webster had three. Courtney Myers (Gig Harbor, WA) made eight saves in just under 50 minutes between the posts.
The Bulldogs begin a three-game road trip in Oregon on Tuesday at Pacific University beginning at 5:30 p.m.
