CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team (4-2, 1-1 SCIAC) were on top of No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) 6-2 early in the second quarter before the Sagehens would score seven of the final nine goals to avoid the upset, 9-8.
With the defense holding the Sagehens at bay, April Bryant (Danville, CA) gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the 8:23 mark of the first. Gwenyth Guico (Camano Island, WA) then found Nicole Sanders (Irvine, CA) for a player advantage tally with 4:05 remaining in the opening quarter.
P-P, though, tied the game at two :46 seconds later and it looked like the two sides would be deadlocked after 15 minutes. This would not be the case however as Emily Webster (Ladera Ranch, CA) and Bryant would go back-to-back in the final :50 seconds to give Redlands a 4-2 lead at the end of one.
The lead extended to four, 6-2, with 11:56 on the clock in the second thanks to another two Bryant connections, her third and fourth goals on the night. The six goals in just over 18 minutes were the same number of goals that the Bulldogs had scored in the previous 221 minutes played against the Sagehens dating back to March 2024.
Despite a strong open to the game, the offense then went cold, failing to score for 31 minutes, while the defense conceded five times as Redlands found themselves trailing for the first time, 7-6, at the 13:17 mark of the fourth.
Bryant and Webster then came to the rescue with a pair of unanswered goals to put Redlands back on top, 8-7, with 9:59 remaining in the game.
Their late push would end there as the Sagehens would tie the game at eight with 6:05 on the clock and then score the eventual game-winning goal less than two minutes later.
Bryant and Webster combined for seven of the eight goals and the lone assist. They were an efficient 7-of-12 on their shots. Bryant also had four draw controls.
The third of the trio that nearly got the Bulldogs their first win of the series since 2017 was goalkeeper Courtney Myers (Gig Harbor, WA) who was a wall between the posts making 15 saves. That is the ninth-most in single-game program history.
Redlands now comes home for their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) home opener against Chapman University on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
