ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's water polo team (3-8, 1-1 SCIAC) earned their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season as they grinded out a 10-7 road win at Chapman University.
Johnny Starr (Bakersfield, CA) got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with their only goal of the first with 2:12 on the clock. Camilo Solis (Camarillo, CA) then scored on a powerplay to even the game at two with the only goal by either side in the second quarter.
In the third Oliver Finley (Cape Town, South Africa) converted on a penalty, Nick Davidson (Honolulu, HI) found Jake Simpson (El Cajon, CA), and Joseph Madigan (Arlington, VA) assisted Ossie Joplin (Kentfield, CA) for a 5-3 U of R lead with 3:32 to play in the third.
Chapman, though, scored the final goal of the third and the first of the fourth to tie the game at five. An Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) goal, however, with 6:27 to play, sparked a 3-0 Bulldog run that would seal the win.
During the run Simpson got his second and third goals of the game, which made it 8-5 Bulldogs with 3:34 remaining in the game.
The Panthers were able to cut the lead to two, 8-6, with 2:07 to go, but insurance goals by Tanner Stagner (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Davidson ended any doubt.
Simpson had a team-high three goals and two drawn exclusions. Davidson and Lambert also had multi-point evenings with a goal and an assist along with a drawn exclusion. Matias Sheridan (Honolulu, HI) got his second-straight start and made four saves with a steal.
Redlands takes a break from SCIAC play as they head to Claremont for a total of four games at the Gary Troyer Tournament with two being played on Friday and Saturday, October 2-3. They begin their run of games with University of California, San Diego at 11:30 a.m. at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
