Bulldog Football Defeats Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 49-21

The University of Redlands football team traveled to nearby Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against the Stags. With a diversified offense and steady defense, the Bulldogs gained the 49-21 victory at Zinda Field.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring on its first drive, putting together a 14-play, 85-yard scoring series early in the first quarter. After the Stags fumbled the ball on its initial opportunity, Redlands recovered the ball and converted that possession into a touchdown by making four efficient plays for 41 yards. Despite giving up a Stag touchdown late in the first quarter, the Bulldogs responded with a score of their own to open the second, going up 21-7. A few minutes later, Redlands took advantage of another CMS fumble and scored its fourth touchdown at 6:38 to go in the first half. Due to their strong defense, the Bulldogs forced the Stags to give up the ball on downs with less than a minute remaining in the half. Redlands cruised 44 yards down the field in five plays to convert another touchdown, taking a 35-7 lead at halftime. The second half saw much of the same results for Redlands as graduate student Kyle Godfrey (Apple Valley, CA) ran back a punt return for 59 yards into the Stag end zone for the score. Despite giving up two CMS touchdowns in the fourth, the Bulldogs gained their seventh, seven-point play of the day to earn the solid 49-21victory.

Led by junior quarterback Dan Selway (Orange, CA), Redlands gained solid yardage from seven different receivers, accumulating 211 yards on 18 catches for four touchdowns. Leading the crew, senior wide receiver Kenny Romero (Hollister, CA) made four receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown, including a long of 22. Godfrey tallied five catches for 45 yards and a score while junior wide receiver Brian Putman (Bakersfield, CA) proved extremely efficient with 46 yards on only three receptions. Rounding out the receiving corps, sophomore wide receiver Brenden Barkate (Bakersfield, CA) made two important grabs for 34 yards as sophomore Evan Reuter (Cameron Park, CA came up with two catches for 23 yards. Overall, Selway went 17-for-28 with only one interception for 200 yards while sophomore quarterback Steve Smith (Lake Oswego, OR) connected with Reuter for his first career touchdown.

On the ground, Redlands gained solid numbers from junior running back Zack Schafer (Saugus, CA), who tallied 68 yards on 19 carries. In addition, junior running back Jeff Stewart (Newark, CA) tallied 61 yards on 14 attempts for a touchdown while sophomore running back George Foreman IV (Huffman, TX) averaged 5.1 yards per carry with 56 yards on 11 opportunities. Overall, the team tallied 214 yards rushing for two touchdowns.

On defense, sophomore defensive back Jared Fink (El Paso, TX) and junior defensive lineman Gavril Gabriel (Downey, CA) tied for the team-lead with six tackles apiece. Fink earned one sack while Gavril posted 2.5 tackles for a loss.

The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-1 SCIAC) look forward to hosting the University of La Verne on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
