The University of Redlands football team traveled to nearby
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday for a Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against
the Stags. With a diversified offense and steady defense, the
Bulldogs gained the 49-21 victory at Zinda Field.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on its first drive, putting
together a 14-play, 85-yard scoring series early in the first
quarter. After the Stags fumbled the ball on its initial
opportunity, Redlands recovered the ball and converted that
possession into a touchdown by making four efficient plays for 41
yards. Despite giving up a Stag touchdown late in the first
quarter, the Bulldogs responded with a score of their own to open
the second, going up 21-7. A few minutes later, Redlands took
advantage of another CMS fumble and scored its fourth touchdown at
6:38 to go in the first half. Due to their strong defense, the
Bulldogs forced the Stags to give up the ball on downs with less
than a minute remaining in the half. Redlands cruised 44 yards down
the field in five plays to convert another touchdown, taking a 35-7
lead at halftime. The second half saw much of the same results for
Redlands as graduate student Kyle Godfrey (Apple Valley, CA) ran
back a punt return for 59 yards into the Stag end zone for the
score. Despite giving up two CMS touchdowns in the fourth, the
Bulldogs gained their seventh, seven-point play of the day to earn
the solid 49-21victory.
