Bulldog Football Earns Dominating Win over Whittier

The University of Redlands football team returned to Ted Runner Stadium on Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against the Poets of Whittier College.  With tenacious defense and an efficient offense, the Bulldogs dominated the game with a 59-6 routing over the Poets.

Redlands converted five of its first six possessions into touchdowns and earned a safety to storm out to a 35-0 halftime lead.  Redlands owned the shutout until 3:19 to go in the third when Whittier's quarterback Josh Scurlock scurried into the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown.  The Bulldogs blocked the ensuing point-after-try and remained ahead by a score of 45-6.  While playing much of the squad, the Bulldogs posted two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with sophomore running back George Foreman IV (Huffman, TX) and freshman quarterback Tom Farinacci (Tigard, OR) earning scores for Redlands.

As a team, the Bulldogs tallied 677 yards of total offense on 79 plays for a new school record, improving upon the previous record of 667 yards during a game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on September 30, 1995.

Overall, junior quarterback Dan Selway (shown in photo; Villa Park, CA) proved very efficient for the Bulldogs, going 23-for-32 for 391 yards and four touchdowns.  He connected with 12 different receivers, gaining eight catches from graduate student wide receiver Kyle Godfrey (Apple Valley, CA) for 69 yards.  Sophomore wide receiver Sean Scott (Bellevue, WA) tallied 86 yards on two catches, including 69 yards on the Bulldogs' first touchdown of the game.  Junior tight end Jake Lacey (Ontario, CA) posted three receptions for 89 yards, including a long of 55.

The Bulldogs also remained diversified in their running game as 10 different players carried the ball.  Leading the way, junior running back Zack Schafer (Saugus, CA) posted 120 yards on 13 carries, including a long of 51 yards.  He also scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run during the opening quarter.

Defensively, Redlands gave a total team effort with six different players notching tackles for a loss, including senior defensive back Conor Drake (Jackson, CA), junior linebacker Mack Gordon (Bermuda Dunes, CA), freshman defensive back Tom Mouwen (Moorpark, CA), sophomore defensive end Tam Berhe (Colton, CA), junior defensive lineman Mitchell Crocco (New Castle, WA), and junior defensive lineman Tyler Sutton (Claremont, CA).  In addition, Drake, senior defensive back Brad Smith (Burlingame, CA), junior defensive back Nick Graves (San Diego, CA), and freshman defensive back Mike Nicolini (Novato, CA) picked off passes for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1) look forward to facing undefeated SCIAC foe Cal Lutheran University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Thousand Oaks.
