The University of Redlands football team returned to Ted Runner
Stadium on Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against the Poets of Whittier
College. With tenacious defense and an efficient offense, the
Bulldogs dominated the game with a 59-6 routing over the Poets.
Redlands converted five of its first six possessions into
touchdowns and earned a safety to storm out to a 35-0 halftime
lead. Redlands owned the shutout until 3:19 to go in the
third when Whittier's quarterback Josh Scurlock scurried into the
end zone on a 2-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs blocked the
ensuing point-after-try and remained ahead by a score of
45-6. While playing much of the squad, the Bulldogs posted
two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with sophomore running back
George Foreman IV (Huffman, TX) and freshman quarterback Tom
Farinacci (Tigard, OR) earning scores for Redlands.
As a team, the Bulldogs tallied 677 yards of total offense on 79
plays for a new school record, improving upon the previous record
of 667 yards during a game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges
on September 30, 1995.
Overall, junior quarterback Dan Selway (shown in photo; Villa
Park, CA) proved very efficient for the Bulldogs, going 23-for-32
for 391 yards and four touchdowns. He connected with 12
different receivers, gaining eight catches from graduate student
wide receiver Kyle Godfrey (Apple Valley, CA) for 69 yards.
Sophomore wide receiver Sean Scott (Bellevue, WA) tallied 86 yards
on two catches, including 69 yards on the Bulldogs' first touchdown
of the game. Junior tight end Jake Lacey (Ontario, CA) posted
three receptions for 89 yards, including a long of 55.
The Bulldogs also remained diversified in their running game as
10 different players carried the ball. Leading the way,
junior running back Zack Schafer (Saugus, CA) posted 120 yards on
13 carries, including a long of 51 yards. He also scored a
touchdown on a 2-yard run during the opening quarter.
Defensively, Redlands gave a total team effort with six
different players notching tackles for a loss, including senior
defensive back Conor Drake (Jackson, CA), junior linebacker Mack
Gordon (Bermuda Dunes, CA), freshman defensive back Tom Mouwen
(Moorpark, CA), sophomore defensive end Tam Berhe (Colton, CA),
junior defensive lineman Mitchell Crocco (New Castle, WA), and
junior defensive lineman Tyler Sutton (Claremont, CA). In
addition, Drake, senior defensive back Brad Smith (Burlingame, CA),
junior defensive back Nick Graves (San Diego, CA), and freshman
defensive back Mike Nicolini (Novato, CA) picked off passes for the
Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1) look forward to facing undefeated SCIAC
foe Cal Lutheran University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Thousand
Oaks.
