Redlands Men's Soccer Cruises to 2-0 Victory over Caltech

The Bulldog men’s soccer team opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action in style this evening by earning a 2-0 win over the Beavers of Caltech. In addition, this first home victory of the 2007 season became a milestone marker for Head Coach Ralph Perez, who captured his 200th career win.

Redlands came out strong from the opening kickoff, but solid play from Caltech’s defensive line disrupted most of the Bulldogs offensive drives. Sophomore Cale Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA) broke things open in the eighth minute of play, notching his first career goal off a cross into the middle from junior Ross Schunk (Portland, OR). Later that same half, sophomore Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT) sealed the victory for Redlands with a graceful header off a Bryan Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA) cross from the left side. The tough Bulldog defense held the Beaver’s to just one shot.

Overall, Perez boasts a career record of 200-132-40 with head coaching stints at Whittier College, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Los Angeles, Santa Clara University, Old Dominion University, and now the University of Redlands.

The Bulldogs travel to the University of La Verne on Saturday, September 15, for a 7 p.m. game against the Leopards. Redlands returns home on Monday, September 17, for a non-conference match against NAIA-power Westmont College at 7 p.m.
