Redlands Volleyball Falters to #9 La Verne in Straight Sets

The University of Redlands volleyball team hoped it would repeat last year’s exciting upset over then-ranked #3 University of La Verne to open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition tonight. However, the Leopards had another plan, as they swept the Bulldogs in front of 248 fans in Currier Gym, 30-24, 30-15, 30-18.

Game one remained close with four lead changes and seven tied scores but Redlands finally succumbed to La Verne in a tight score of 24-30. Despite great defensive plays and long rallies, games two and three saw the Leopards gain control late in the action and hold on for the solid wins.

Overall, the Bulldogs held La Verne to a .161 hitting percentage with junior Ashley Williams (Sunland, CA) and sophomore Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA) each supplying 20 digs for Redlands. Williams also dished out 23 assists while sophomore Jordann Tanner (Vista, CA) provided seven kills to lead Redlands. For La Verne, senior Jodi Lindsay (Alta Loma, CA) and junior Brianna Gonzales (Whittier, CA) put away 11 and 10 kills, respectively. The Leopards looked to a well-rounded effort on defense with Gonzales leading the team with 16 digs.

Redlands falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC while La Verne improves to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC. The Bulldogs look to rebound on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as they host the Beavers of Caltech in a conference match.
